The article examines the influence that the design conditions of public space can have on fear of crime. We use as a case study the popular neighbourhood of Año Nuevo in Comas (Lima, Peru), a district with high rates of crime and fear of crime. We made semi-structured interviews to identify locations of high avoidance, a graphic analysis of urban conditions and an observational analysis of urban qualities related to fear of crime. The results of the study indicated that the places that generate fear of crime are the perimeters of walled facilities and streets with a high concentration of informal commerce. In the first case, the trigger is the condition of inactive edges or frontages and the poor quality of the urban design of the perimeter of the facilities; in the second case, places of entrapment and interruptions in sight lines are generated. The study contributes to the field of study by providing a user-friendly methodological tool.
