Abstract

This article examines contemporary populism in Latin America and its interweaving with the temporal categories of cycle and crisis. It starts from an analysis of the lessons left by this type of regimes, currently in crisis, at least in the region. It also studies the internal historical cycle of emergencerise- decline-crisis shown by populism. The article offers a survey of the concept of populism in the context of the contemporary political theory that has accompanied the most recent populist experiences in Latin America. I argue that the concept of populism has a semantic structure of “complex of opposites” and, on the basis of the current theoretical debate, I point out some of the contradictions that can explain its current crisis and end of cycle. The article advances a discussion of the historical period of populism. The main contention is that populism shows a temporality linked to cycle and crisis, which can account for its persistence in Latin America.
