Abstract

Aníbal Pinto's work provides an excellent basis for examining some of the changes that have taken place in economic and political relations between Latin America and the United States in recent years, to try to find an interpretation of them, and to scrutinize in future prospects. This constitutes an obvious reality, as Pinto shows: that the North American approaches to these relationships have been undergoing very significant changes. Although unfortunately the work we are commenting on does not examine the other side of the medal –the attitudes of Latin Americans in relation to their hegemonic power–, it is well known that here too there have been changes of the greatest importance.

Osvaldo Sunkel

Ha sido funcionario de la CEPAL y del ILPES desde 1955 hasta 1968. Profesor de las Escuela de Economía de las Universidades de Chile y Católica de Chile e investigador del Instituto de Estudios Internacionales. Actualmente es miembro del Instituto Coordinador de Investigaciones Sociales (ICIS) de la Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO), en Santiago de Chile. Además es profesor invitado del Instituto de Estudios del Desarrollo de la Universidad de Sussex, Inglaterra, y del Instituto Max Planck de Starnberg, Alemania. Autor de El subdesarrollo latinoamericano y la teoría del desarrollo, en colaboración con Pedro Paz, y de otras obras y artículos sobre problemas del subdesarrollo y las relaciones económicas internacionales de América Latina.
