The characteristic feature of Latin American integration efforts in recent years has been the formation of integration groups. Due to its privileged economic situation, Venezuela is in a position to undertake important actions for the coordination of such efforts. The formation of subregional agreements should not be seen as disintegration; rather, on the contrary, the formation of these groups of accelerated integration helps form a firmer base on which to attempt compromises between nations and groups of nations when the situation of each one of them within the continental context is more defined. In order to strengthen Latin American ties, Venezuela must assert its status as a Caribbean country without thereby weakening the commitments already established with other Latin American countries through ALALC and especially with the Andean countries through the Cartagena Agreement.
