Abstract

Economic interests have been of primary importance in US policy toward Latin America. However, lately, their relationships have become more complex and global considerations have begun to predominate, replacing the hemispheric ones. The "special relationship" has vanished. What is the new logic of US economic interests in Latin America? What changes have occurred? How do these influence the foreign and security policy of that country? To attempt an answer, this paper distinguishes three US economic objectives that affect its policy for Latin America: a) defense of the interests of private companies abroad; b) assistance for the economic development of the region and c) safeguarding the global free market economic system and private enterprise. We maintain that the latter has gained prominence and influenced US policies in the region.
