Abstract

The main finding that emerges from an analysis of contemporary international relations is that the world power structure is not only changing in long cycles, but also in short-term cycles. This fact is also true for the analysis of the international relations of South America, especially to study its insertion in the world of strategic issues and to understand its external links in the political-military field. In this paper we argue that a new regional security system of its own is necessary, product of an endogenous resolution, which does not try to achieve a leading role for South America in strategic matters, but rather regional cooperation, protecting and at the same time developing long-term common interests at the defense level.
