Abstract

Alberto Fujimori surprised Peru and the world on the afternoon of Sunday, April 5, by announcing on national television the "temporary" suspension of the Constitution and the Congress of his country. This article analyzes the self-coup and asks about the president's reasons for taking this initiative, taking into account the international reaction and the internal political consequences. We maintain that the pronouncement was carefully planned and that its costs had been evaluated. On the one hand, Peru had managed to insert itself economically into the international system, reversing the economic crisis and, on the other, had the support of the people. However, the main doubt about the effectiveness of the self-coup is in the effect it will have on the fight against Shining Path.
