Abstract

The 1990s showed an unprecedented map for Latin America, where almost all of the area's governments had come to power through democratic elections. However, it was also possible to see that coups d'etat appeared - some of them aborted, but others that managed to consolidate themselves in power - whose peculiar characteristic was what was called the self-coup or civil-military coup. This new form of political instability, despite having antecedents in the region, took place in Peru in 1992. This paper tries to establish the characteristics of the Guatemalan self-coup in 1993, analyzing the endogenous and exogenous factors that prevented its realization.
