This special issue of International Studies commemorates the fortieth anniversary of the Institute of International Studies. This is a valuable opportunity to reflect on its creation, trajectory and perspectives. Said reflection must begin by pointing out that the circumstances of world and Latin American politics in the 1960s were very favorable for the creation in Chile of an academic center of the Institute. That is, a university institution that is devoted to the systematic study of international issues from a multidisciplinary point of view and a view from the region. One of the expressions of the academic trajectory of the institution has been the uninterrupted publication during these forty years of the Journal of International Studies. The continuity of this publication has made it possible to collect and permanently reflect the transformations of the international system.
