Abstract

This paper studies the Peruvian presidential and parliamentary elections held in 2006. It describes and analyzes the context in which they were held and the factors that explain the victory of Alan García and the result of the parliamentary election; It explores how the three main candidates (Lourdes Flores, Alan García and Ollanta Humala) approached the issue of the Chile-Peru relationship and addresses the issue of the consequences that García's victory could have for the future of relations between both countries. For this, the Peruvian political and economic context and its electoral system are described; the presidential electoral campaign is analyzed, especially in regard of how the issue of Chile was present and the electoral results of the first and second presidential rounds and the parliamentary elections, and what the effects would be for the future of relations between Chile and Peru, are explained.
