In this article the pre-college institute is pointed out as an example of non-formal education Pedro de Valdivia Pre-College Institute is analyzed by showing its historical development and its more outstanding features. This, in relation to the system of selection for entrance to the Chilean universities and its variations in the course of time. Also, the role that non-formal education might play is signalized by its complementary function to formal education.
