Filled pauses in Chilean Spanish of Santiago: Pragmatic and Sociolinguistic analysis

Abstract

This article analyzes the pragmatic behavior and sociolinguistic stratification of filled pauses in a sample of 72 sociolinguistic interviews conducted with speakers from Santiago, Chile. The study approaches the sub-values of these particles, in relation to its preferential position, as well as the correlation of its use with sociodemographic factors: sex-gender, age and socioeconomic group of the speakers. The results show that the filled pause puta is more frequently used by younger speakers, while eh it is less used by women of the middle socioeconomic group.
