Abstract

Cíntia Moscovich, in her short stories, invites us to get to know and dialogue about the role of the women within the Jewish community in Brazil. The female protagonists of the short stories The man who returned to the cold (2000), Cats love fish but hate to get their paws wet (2012) and book Why am I fat, mother? (2006), address the process of women’s emancipation. Through the approach of everyday family scenes where food has a significant place, these characters reflect internal questionings of being a woman that reinterprets her role as mother, wife, and daughter. The act of eating is related to questioning the redefinition of the Jewish condition relevant today, where questionings of universal values are transcribed from the female point of view.
