Tension between professional work and motherhood: representations about professional work in women who have decided against experiencing motherhood

Authors

Abstract

This article explores the place occupied by professional work in the lives of women working in Greater Rosario (Argentina) who have decided against motherhood. With an intensive methodology based on in-depth interviews, I have approached how the changes in the labor market and their implications strain and resignify the relationship between professional work and motherhood. My findings reveal that while professional work constitutes an important reference in the economic, cultural, psychological and symbolic fields, the consolidation of labor flexibility in a society where caregiving roles are still attributed to women makes it impossible to achieve a simultaneity between professional work and motherhood for a significant portion of the subjects, which evidences an increased tension between capital and social reproduction in the current capitalist regime.
