Social representations of masculinity on violence against women in university students

Abstract

Gender studies have set the guidelines for describing violence against women from traditional roles of hegemonic masculinity, with social representations of the masculine being the predecessor axis of the construction of the man in the face of this type of violence. This qualitative study aims to describe, from the social representations of the guidelines for masculinity, the conceptualization of violence against women in university men in Mexico City, through the biographical-narrative method. Narratives organized into two categories were collected, the experience of masculinity in adolescence and today, with four subcategories each. Patterns of family upbringing and university education were found that influenced the construction of masculinity in the face of the perception of violence towards women. The study provides new discourses of being a man based on contemporary practices of masculinities.
