This paper introduces a discussion on the status and paradigms of this new branch of the social anthropology called maritime anthropology. After identifying the principal empirical and conceptual problems confronting the social researcher in the study of fishing communities, the authors offer some analitical tools that facilitate the understanding of the economic, social and political processes in which fishermen are integrated.
