Abstract

In Rome, the family was, as in times of Bartolo, a unit of assets. This does not exclude, but rather, that it was a spiritual unity and a political actor, among other things. The author addresses this fundamental issue and its subsequent evolution to the dawn of the Middle Ages, a process in which the Roman family will be an extended family to become a nuclear one. This is a change of enormous importance, in the words of Jack Goody, although their reasons are not entirely correct, this change is the distinguishing factor, as regards family, between Christianity and other Mediterranean societies.
