Structural design of ecological connectivity for biodiversity conservation at landscape level in the province of Granma, Cuba

Authors

Abstract

One of the strategies for the biodiversity conservation at the landscape level is a network of structural connectivity among core areas of conservation. However, the design of the protected areas has lacked analysis among them in the province of Granma, Cuba. This paper presents a proposal for connectivity routes between vegetation patches within the 15 protected areas in Granma by using a cost-distance model based on a friction map that was developed from the evaluation of five critical variables. The characteristics of the identified routes were analyzed, and the 15 protected areas were categorized as transit or origin-destination based on the number of routes that pass through
them. The work carried out makes it possible to identify 56 connectivity nodes in the whole protected areas and obtain 3080 connectivity routes, which are 59% altitudinal and 41% longitudinal. The density of routes reflects
the most-conducive areas to connectivity in the province and allows the classification of protected areas in five as origin-destination and four as transit. It makes possible to identify the potential connectivity routes and their feasibility for the design of corridors of biodiversity.
