Discursive markers of Spanish in Otomi narratives. First observations

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of Spanish grammatical loans with discursive function in the Otomi language using an onomasiological approach. Using data from traditional and life narratives, I formed a corpus composed of 13,617 words obtained from sixteen Otomi-Spanish bilingual collaborators that belong to the central Mexico Otomi variant (locality of San Andres Cuexcontitlan, State of Mexico). Here I show that some Spanish grammatical loans (conjugations and adverbs) can have a discursive function, especially metadiscursive (structural), and cognitive (logical connection). However, I found that loans with epistemic and evidential function have a low incidence in the corpus. This finding suggests that Otomi speakers may prefer using the native linguistic resources from Otomi to express evidential values since this language has grammatical elements that encode this type of information.
