Resumen
The author presents an analysis of Andrés Bello as a defender of classical
humanism, within the scope of his vast labours in Latín America. He points out
his exceptional capacities as a teacher, based on his faith in man, whom he
wanted to see advancing towards a full development, both as an individual and
as a social being, through education and love of freedom, generated, according
to Bello, by the progress of wisdom, including the practica! application of the
arts and sciences. It should also be signaled out that Bello's humanism owes much to his command of Latín, which permitted him to deeply understand the culture of the classics, law and Spanish language.
