Abstract

Through the application of contemporary ontoepistemological notions of the mapuche culture to its congeners in the 17th century we’ll seek to give an explanation to the attitude of acceptance and rejection towards the Christian funerary ceremony. We’ll contend that there is an historical continuity regarding the main fundaments that define being mapuche and its methods of building up knowledge. These aspects influenced the indigenous attitudes which were expressed through an eschatological rituality and a way of sociability.
