Abstract

The present paper aims at developing a conceptual framework for the analysis of modernization of labor relations in Chile at the level of firms. The first part is a review of the bibliography on the subject, from which characteristics and action patterns of modernizations are defined. From the analysis of the bibliography some basic components of modernization are proposed as suitable instruments for empirical research. Several hypotheses on the development of modernization of labor relations in Chilean firms are presented, with an emphasis on the influence of certain factors on modernization processes, environmental pressures, characteristics of firms, and the degree and forms of participation of social actors, especially entrepreneurs and workers. The contents seek to increase the understanding of change in labor relations in Chile, by providing clues on efforts to modernize this kind of relations.
